Happy Halloween!

The costume might seem funny to some, but what they don't realize is that in the current social climate that we live in, the costume is just plain dehumanizing.

…or is it?  It was the question that many Latinos were wondering as they caught word of the offensive “illegal alien” Halloween custom that was being sold by many retailers across the U.S.  A successful campaign by immigrant rights activists was waged to sound the alarm on this, which led to national media coverage.  Subsequently, retailers like Target, Walgreens, eBay, and Amazon.com removed the costume from their inventories.  It was another example of the growing political clout that Latinos are beginning to exercise on a variety of issues, as I have previously argued here.  I woud like to echo the setiments that were expressed so well by César J. Baldelomar over at the Christians for Comprehensive Immigration Reform blog: the language that we use can define our social realities in deeper ways that we might at first realize.

I would actually like to take it a step farther and call on something that I see being ignored by the corporate media and (sadly) by even many immigrant rights activists: that the ONLY permanent solution to our ’illegal immigration’ woes is to combat the oppressing poverty that creates ‘illegal immigrants.’  No amount of border walls, deportations, or discrimination will ever stop ‘illegal’ immigration because those things never address the true source of the problem: the poverty that forces many to flee their homelands.  Professor of Linguistics George Lakoff said it best on The Framing of Immigration piece when he bascially analyzed how we do not have an ‘illegal immigration problem’ or an ‘illegal employer problem’ (to lable it as such would undermine the scope of what we’re actually dealing with here), but rather a full-blown HUMANITARIAN crisis:

Perhaps the problem might be better understood as a humanitarian crisis. Can the mass migration and displacement of people from their homelands at a rate of 800,000 people a year be understood as anything else? Unknown numbers of people have died trekking through the extreme conditions of the Arizona and New Mexico desert. Towns are being depopulated and ways of life lost in rural Mexico. Fathers feel forced to leave their families in their best attempt to provide for their kids. Everyday, boatloads of people arrive on our shores after miserable journeys at sea in deplorable conditions.

As a humanitarian crisis, the solution could involve The UN or the Organization of American States. But these bodies do not have roles in the immigration frame, so they have no place in an “immigration debate.” Framing this as just an “immigration problem” prevents us from penetrating deeper into the issue.

Language is a powerful thing because we shape our language based on our reality and our reality is shaped by language. It’s a circular thing and we can break the cycle of ignorance by introducing new powerful terminology that can shape our realities in a positive way.  As I used to say it before on my old Myspace page:

…people talk about “illegal aliens,” which dehumanizes the issue and implies that immigrants that enter the country with no documents are criminal, other-worldly beings. Yet no one talks about the fact that they are simply Economic Refugees (refugiados por causa de la economia); human beings that have ventured to seek out a better life for themselves…

…To reduce the discussion to a soundbite of “those that break our immigration laws must be punished and must not be rewarded for the criminal behavior” frankly leads to nothing productive. If you want to talk about doing illegal and/or wrong things then maybe you should talk about how the United States has oftentimes contributed to the economic woes of many countries. If you want to talk about taking responsibility for your own actions, then maybe the United States should take responsibility for what it has done with the International Monetary Fund’s INTERVENTIONS(click here for details) in third world countries. If you want to talk about wrong doing maybe you ought to be talking about American maquiladora factories and their low wages/cheap labor practices. Maybe you ought to look into how some American business interests have gone into many countries, sucked them up dry, and bailed out; adding to their economic woes.

Sadly, I’m afraid that we’re missing the boat on this one.  Immigration reform would be a good first step towards improving our current social situation.  However, if the quest for immigration reform does not at the very least contain a serious conversation regarding the role that oppressing poverty has in all of this, then I am afraid that it will just be another band-aid ’fix’.  Maybe it’s time now (as a first step) to call on our government to ditch the ‘illegal alien’ term and instead adopt ‘economic refugee.’

What everyone wants

Let’s be honest. Everyone loves a little attention. But how much is too much? Today there are an uncountable amount of social networks and applications that are made available to the masses. Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace are just a few of the social sites that one can join. All three of these sites consist of the capability to update statuses. Every moment of your day can be shared with hundreds of people. Your every move can be followed by friends and acquaintances by a simple click of a mouse. What is the drive behind the population’s need to be connected with each other through so many mediums? Why are there countless videos of ridiculous acts being posted everyday on YouTube? How can we explain society’s obsession personal broadcast?

According to CNN, “The desire to be famous comes from a basic human need to be part of a group, said Orville Gilbert Brim, psychologist and author of the new book “Look at Me! The Fame Motive From Childhood to Death,” out this month from the University of Michigan Press.”

Is evolution the base for our endless need for attention? Gilbert seems to think so. He also states, “The desire for attention may date back to the days of early humans, who lived in small groups. Those who were not approved by a group that protected all of its members would genetically disappear and die off.”

What do you think about Gilbert’s theories? What do you think drives you to update your Twitter every five minutes? Let us know!

Are we Friends?

As I sat down this morning with my cup of chai and ignoring the several “friend” requests on FB…I wondered what the word friend means now. All these social networking sites have revolutionized the word “friend”. So what defined a friend in the good old days..or lets say even three years ago. There are as many definitions of friends as there are clouds in the sky. But for now let’s go to the internet our only trusted source of information today. According to the free web dictionary a simple definition of friend is someone you know well, like and trust. KNOW WELL -that would mean I have met this person at least more than once, spent at least more than 20 minutes talking to them. LIKE would mean I know how they react in certain social situations, behave, and maybe have common interests. Trust would mean that they have my best interest at heart and vice-versa. Now lets define a friend in todays world of social networking sites like Facebook. Take a typical scenario on a friday night – You are invited to a party by a coworker, Melinda. You are not sure if you should go or not as you do not know any of her friends. You decide to make excuses of a dog wash night and then soon realize that your coworker probably remembers last weeks lunch conversation on how you are allergic to pets. So, you decide to wash your hair instead and head out the door with a bottle of wine in hand. As you stand at the door about to ring the door bell you have thoughts of turning around and walking away. But somehow your index finger reaches out and presses the doorbell faster than your feet can turn around. As you walk in the door you are introduced to multitudes of people. From the many short conversations of the night(longest lasting 3.5 minutes) people were like “Oh yeah, I have seen your posts on Melinda’s wall” You have an amazing sense of humor” and oh I loved the purple top you wore last week to your work party”, “you look so much like your mom”, and “how was your trip to Hawaii last month- loved your Pink bikini- btw did you buy it here in LA”, “was that your boyfriend with you in Hawaii- he’s so hot and cute”. Wow, is this for real, it seems like all these people already knew you- your clothes, your vacations, your love interests maybe they even know what you had for breakfast(if you tweet)..Yikes! and you thought you were new to the world of FB. You had just recently started to figure your way around the profiles, how to write on another peoples walls instead of replying back on your own wall, the status updates and most of all the privacy settings. You didn’t realize how much personal info you had displayed on FB that your friend’s friends’ seemed to know everything about you. As you stand flabbergasted, there’s a flash and you realize you have been pulled into yet another group shot. During the shot one person is screaming don’t you dare this put this on FB, while the photographer is screaming “Facebook” instead of Cheese. There were more pictures taken of you tonight than the day you graduated from college surrounded by “friends”. Dazed and confused you try and remember all the names of people in your head on the drive back home. As you plop on the couch at the end of a long evening, you decide to log into FB and see for yourself what all is up for public display in the world of FB. As you log in you see 20 friend requests from the people you met at the party tonite. One of them even has a message inviting you to their 30th b’day party the next night. Isn’t this a big event, don’t they just want their close friends there? Well who cares what they want….What do you want? Do you add them or not? are they really your friends now? Do you really want them commenting on your every picture, do you ant them to hit the LIKE button everytime you post a status update or comment on how anorexic you look when they barely know you. But without much thought you decide to add them, as it would reflect badly on Melinda if you ignored them or gave them only partial access to things. Hence, starts the era of a new “friendship”….and you start rummaging thru your mind as to what you will wear to your “friends” birthday party the next night…wait whose party was it again? Oh well, who cares will know more when I get there, but for now let me write on Melinda’s wall and see if we can go together to the party…. The word friend has become such a loose term now that we have forgotten the true meaning of friendships. Sometimes we end up caring more about what the virtual friends think and see of us. Twitter at least does not lead you into believing that your friends are following you, or you are following a friend. You are just a follower and you have access to everything from what they ate to what they are wearing to if today is the day they cut their toe nails. Do we really as a society care to know all these things about people and most importantly why? When you look at the number of people that join these sites daily- the answer is a resounding YES! Social networking sites like Twitter, FB, myspace, friendster have definitely made the world a smaller place but it’s also made it more open for everyone to peak into our lives. Our parents always warned us of the social effects of telling people too much of what’s going on in our lives. Before people would gossip to find out more information about people, but anymore so they don’t have to. We actually invite them in our lives with a click of a button and give them an open access to our lives, whether it be people who we met thirty years ago(wait that would make me 7 back then…hmm),people that we met once, our chiropractor, yoga instructor, doctor, maybe even our bus driver. Where does this end? I do not think this social phenomenon will end anytime soon. We as a society always choose to go to the dark side of everything before we start retracing our steps and getting back to the world of normalcy. Today we are defined by the number of friends we have on FB, how many people follow us on twitter, and how many people subscribe to our blog rather than the true friends that we can sit with and have a cup of chai on a friday afternoon. If only we could sit and sip chai with our true friends, maybe the meaning of friendship will shine thru the tea leaves… Have a great day my friend!

Cheryl Cole chooses Dannii Minogue to snog

X Factor judge Cheryl Cole has said she would be happy to snog Dannii Minogue. The Girls Aloud singer made the admission when quizzed over who she would snog, marry and avoid out of her X Factor colleagues.

During a live web chat on MySpace she said: “We would have to go snog Dannii, I’d kind of like to avoid the other two.”

When pressed to make a decision between the other two judges, she admitted that she could choose to marry Louis.

She said: “I could not bear the thought of being married to Simon Cowell because one, you would not get a word in edgeways, two, he is always right, and three, because it’s enough just sitting next to him on the weekend.

“I would have to marry Louis just because it would be comfortable and nice and he would make me a nice cup of tea.”

Cheryl’s husband Ashley is reportedly to throw her a “massive party” to celebrate her first solo number one.

Ashley told the Daily Star that he was proud of Cheryl’s performance of `Fight For This Love’ on the X Factor.

He said: “I helped Cheryl with her nerves before her X Factor appearance, it was really exciting.

“I think she looked beautiful and I was very proud of her.”

The footballer revealed that he is planning to whisk Cheryl away after Sunday night’s live X Factor show to a party to celebrate her taking the No1 slot in the charts.

MySpace Adds Music Videos

MySpace (s NWSA) launched a new music video portal today, aggregating licensed content from both big and independent record labels. CEO Owen Van Natta announced the news at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco this afternoon.
Music videos make up a huge chunk of YouTube’s (s GOOG) playcount, and the video site is working with Universal Music and Sony Music to launch the upcoming Vevo music video portal. It’s no wonder that MySpace is getting back to its music roots in order to regain some cultural relevance and make a little coin, as the music vids will include an option to purchase the songs through iTunes or Amazon.

MySpace is evidently now all about the “socialization of content,” a phrase that Van Natta reportedly kept bringing up during his Web 2.0 talk today.

One thing’s for sure, between Vevo, MySpace and MTV’s music portal, there are no shortage of places to find your favorite music videos.

COBRA STAR SHIP MYSPACE ACCOUSTIC SESSION

hey again i hope u liked my previous blog about http://mrtremix.wordpress.com/2009/10/16/grime-is-dead-first-post/ yeah  i know how bad my punctuation is im sorry ok ? lol.    so thanks  for all your feed back

Another busy day in Oxford Street and whilst everyone else is going shopping I’m going off to see an acoustic session by Cobra Starship, at the MySpace building on New Oxford Street.  Before today and even though I’m a London boy, I didn’t know there was a New Oxford Street.  I entered the building with my friend, just in time for the start of the set.  We were briskly escorted to the waiting room because the band were running a bit late which was alright with us, because MySpace had laid on a massive selection of food and drink.  I had a chance to grab a beer and some fruit and it turned out that only me and my friend were there to partake of such a lavish feast.  When the band arrived about 5 minutes later, they all came over and said ‘Hi’ to us.  Then someone from MySpace approached me to say it would take a few minutes for the band to set up.   Five minutes later, we found ourselves in a room packed with 20 people from the music industry and MySpace.  The four band members were humorous and cracked a lot of jokes throughout the whole set. Whilst my friend was really excited to see them, I had come with an open mind.  Loads of my girlfriends are obsessed with them, but I have to admit that I had barely listened to their music.  I was pleasantly surprised when I heard the first track they played – it was one of their classic songs, ‘Good girls go bad’ and I started to realise what all the fuss was about. I could clearly see why girls really liked them – they were really cool and their acoustic set was eye-opening and the songs, catchy.  Their second song, ‘War’ found even a novice to their music like me, tempted to sing along with them. Their third and final song ‘Guilty Pleasure’ was equally as good and even if they were not exactly my cup of tea, I had discovered that I actually really liked them and respected their talent.  Surprisingly, and I have to admit this, it turned out to be one of the best acoustic sets I have seen in a long time.

also the lead singer has  the same exact pair of supra’s, as  me he’s got style.

Beresford Research explores social networks

New research shows that 65% of 18 – 24 year olds turn to their online communities when they have a decision to make. Article from ConnPost.com The report also breaks down social networkers into 4 groups:

- Residents — most comfortable with social networking, they have been members more than 3 years on average, are constantly logged in and have a large number of friends and contacts.

- Twitterers — true extroverts of social networking, they usually have been members for a slightly shorter time than Residents — 1 to 2 years on average — and are most interested in starting new online groups, getting to know new people and discussing online activities.

- Hobbyists — tending to restrict their group of online friends to social contacts, they interact with social networks from home computers and spend the most time updating their status and profile; and

- Rookies – social networking for less than a year, they are by far the least security-minded, and are far less concerned than others that what they share could have a negative impact on future employability.

A tribute to some of the best groups of all time!!! U ready???

Meghan McCain Takes Heat Over Twitter Photo

Meghan McCain said she will quit Twitter after criticism from users for posting a picture of herself in a tank top.

Come on people. Yes, you should be careful what you post on social networking sites. But, let’s just remain “normal” people and be ourselves sometimes. We all have our own faults.

From CNN:

The controversy began quietly enough when McCain, the vocal daughter of the former Republican presidential candidate, tweeted that her self described “spontaneous” night in included reading a biography of the iconic artist Andy Warhol and ordering takeout.

It was there the 24-year old McCain posted the photo of herself wearing a tank top that generated the subsequent controversy .

The photograph apparently generated a string of negative responses, leading McCain to weigh in 15 minutes later: “so I took a fun picture not thinking anything about what I was wearing but apparently anything other than a pantsuit and I am a slut.”

A közösségi oldalak

A további funkciók különböző alkalmazások használata. Legyen az egy kedvenc zenéink lejátszásra alkalmas program vagy egy mini játék amelyet a felhasználók millióival is játszhatunk. Akkor rengeteg ember használja társkeresésre a közösségi oldalakat.
A másik nagy csoport a Fakek a különböző közösségi portálokon.

How to monitor a remote computer

Funniest Blog in the universe: The Best Blog In The Universe.
(http://mcfly.xtreemhost.com come over and get your colons stomped)

Most of the time, it becomes necessary for us to monitor our own computer or a remote computer to keep track of the activities going on. This may be for several reasons. Especially it is most necessary for the parents to monitor their computer to keep track of their children’s activities during their absence. Some people may also require to monitor their computer to keep an eye on the activities of their spouse or partner. Today, with the advancement in the field of the software technology, it’s just a cakewalk to monitor the computer. For this all you have to do is, use a PC Monitoring Software.

But the job doesn’t end here. This is because there exists tons of such monitoring softwares on the market and many times we get confused which to choose and how to use them. So I have decided to make this job simpler for you, by writing this post. In this post I’ll give a detailed information about Computer monitoring softwares which include their features, advantages, installation, usage procedure and so on. To make this post interesting, let’s take up each topic in the form of question and answer.

What exactly is a Monitoring Software and how can it help me ?

A computer monitoring software is just like any other software (program) which when installed, secretly monitors each and every activity that takes place on the computer. The activities such as web browsing, chatting, gaming etc. are all recorded and saved. These monitoring softwares can record each and every keystroke. So it is possible to capture usernames and passwords very easily with minimum effort. Monitoring softwares are also commonly known as Keyloggers.

How can I install a monitoring software ?

Installing a monitoring software is too simple. During the installation, you need to setup a secret password and hotkey combination which is required later to see the recorded data ( logs). After the installation is complete the software goes invisible, but keeps running in the background. Whenever you want to see the logs, just press the hotkey combination (ex. Shift+Ctrl+F10). Now a small window will popup asking for a password. Here you need to enter the password that was setup during the installation time. After you enter the password you’ll be able to see all the activities that took place on the computer during your absence.

Can the person using the computer come to know about the presence of the Monitoring Software ?

Most of the time it becomes impossible to detect the presence of the monitoring software. This is because, once installed it hides itself from Start menu, Program Files, Control Panel, Task manager etc. Because of it’s stealth behaviour the user can never come to know that he/she is under the presence of monitoring.

Religion, the Facebook way Listing one's faith on social network not always simple

For the longest time, the question just sat there on his screen. Cursor blinking. Waiting quietly, like a patient priest in a confessor’s box.Religious Views: _____.

Creating a Facebook profile for the first time, Eric Heim hadn’t expected something so serious. He had whipped through the social network Web site’s questionnaire about his interests, favorite movies and relationship status, typing witty replies wherever possible. But when he reached the little blank box asking for his core beliefs, it stopped him short.

“It’s Facebook. The whole point is to keep it light and playful, you know?” said Heim, 27, a college student from Dumfries, Va. “But a question like that kind of makes you think.”

Such public proclamations of beliefs used to require a baptism in water, or a circumcision, or learning the Five Pillars of Islam. Now Facebook users announce their spiritual identity with the stroke of a few keys. And what they are typing into the open-ended box offers a revealing peek into modern faith and what happens to that faith as it migrates online.

Of its 250 million users worldwide, Facebook says, more than 150 million people choose to write something in the religious views box.

Amid the endless trivialities of social networking sites — quotes from Monty Python, the Stephen Colbert for Prez groups — the tiny box has become a surprisingly meaningful pit stop for philosophical inquiry.

Millions have plumbed their innermost thoughts, struggling to sum up their beliefs in roughly 10 words or less. For many, it has led to age-old questions about purpose, the existence of the divine and the meaning of life itself.

Some emerge from the experience with serious answers. George Mason University student Travis Hammill, 19, spent several days distilling his beliefs into this sentence: “Love God, Love Others, Change the World.”

Others try to deflect the question with humor.

“Pastafarian,” typed Maddy Gillis, 20, of Kensington, Md., invoking a popular pseudo-religion that venerates a “Flying Spaghetti Monster.”

The religious views box debuted in 2006, two years after Facebook’s launch. Before that, users who talked about faith did so mostly in the “About Me” area.

The most popular faith professed is “Christian” and the various denominations associated with it. The second most popular entry is “Islam,” followed by “Atheist.” Interestingly enough, “Jedi” makes an appearance at No. 10.

Fear of judgment often plays an outsize role in how young adults express their religious views online, said Piotr Bobkowski, a doctoral student at the University of North Carolina who is conducting a two-year survey of religion on MySpace.
